Electrochromics

Electrochromic (EC) display utilises the color reflective technology, in which a thin film of EC materials can reversibly change colors when charged with electricity. Because the color change is persistent, only a small amount of energy is required for the switch. Therefore the energy consumption of EC display is in fact very low compared to that of LCDs (liquid crystal displays) or OLEDs (organic light-emitting diodes). In addition, there is low eye-strain from viewing the EC display, since it is reflective and non-emissive of light.

EC-based devices have several advantages:

  • Low Cost

  • Abundant, Non-Toxic, Inexpensive EC Materials

  • Flexible, Robust, Lightweight Modules

  • Broad Color Reproducibility

  • High-Resolution Display Element

  • Environmentally friendly, Low-power Display

  • Customisable appearance and design

EC technology has become popular as a key technology for electronic paper, and it will be available for many other applications in various industry sectors as well:

  • Advertisement companies

  • Government/Public transportation agencies

  • Car/motorcycle/boat/aerospace industry

  • Mining/Oil/Gas industry

  • Military/Defence industry

  • Consumer electronics

  • Housing material supplier and building/urban designer
